Full spectrum cannabidiol (fsCBD) is a product derived from the Cannabis plant that contains cannabidiol (CBD) along with other naturally occurring cannabinoids, including trace amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC, typically less than 0.3%), and other plant compounds like terpenes. It is distinct from broad spectrum CBD (which contains no THC) and CBD isolate (pure CBD). While the FDA has approved a purified CBD product (Epidiolex) for specific epilepsy syndromes, fsCBD products are often marketed as dietary supplements or for various therapeutic potentials. Its complex mechanism of action involves modulating the endocannabinoid system by interacting with cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2), activating 5-HT1A serotonergic and TRPV1-2 vanilloid receptors, and antagonizing alpha-1 adrenergic and mu-opioid receptors. It also inhibits voltage-dependent sodium and potassium channels, stimulates glycine receptors, and inhibits fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) and certain cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYP3A4, CYP2C19, CYP2C8). These diverse actions contribute to its investigated anticonvulsant, analgesic, anxiolytic, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects.
