Overview

Fullerenol-C60 is a water-soluble derivative of the carbon-60 (C60) fullerene molecule that has been functionalized with multiple hydroxyl (-OH) groups. This modification enhances its solubility in water and biological systems. Fullerenol-C60 exhibits strong antioxidant properties by scavenging free radicals such as superoxide anion and hydroxy radical. It can also interact with reactive oxygen species (ROS), providing cytoprotective effects against oxidative stress in various tissues. Preclinical studies have demonstrated its potential to reduce oxidative and histopathological damage in organs such as lungs, kidneys, and skeletal muscle following ischemia-reperfusion injury. Additionally, it shows promise for use as an anti-inflammatory agent and may have antiviral activity against influenza viruses. Its unique structure allows for applications across pharmaceuticals (as a diagnostic reagent or therapeutic agent), cosmetics, materials science, and nanotechnology[3][4][5][7][9][10].
