Fumaria officinalis

Fumaria officinalis L., commonly known as fumitory, is a plant traditionally valued in European and Asian herbal medicine. Its phytochemical composition is rich in isoquinoline alkaloids, such as protopine and stylopine, and various phenolic compounds including caffeoylmalic acid, quercetin dihexoside, rutin, and methylquercetin dihexoside. Scientific investigations highlight its potential for anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, and antioxidant activities. Specific compounds like stylopine have been identified as potential cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors. The plant extract also demonstrates cytotoxic effects against leukemia and multiple myeloma cell lines and promotes diabetic wound healing by upregulating genes for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β), and fibroblast growth factor 2 (b-FGF). Formulations incorporating Fumaria officinalis extracts, such as nano-liposomal carriers and chitosan nanoparticles, are being explored for dermal applications and wound dressings.
