The functional collagen scaffold is a regenerative medicine platform developed primarily by Professor Dai Jianwu and his team at the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. It consists of a three-dimensional collagen matrix designed to provide structural guidance and a biochemical microenvironment for tissue repair. The scaffold is often 'functionalized' by incorporating bioactive molecules—such as growth factors (VEGF, SDF-1α, CNTF, bFGF), antibodies (EGFR antibody, Sca-1 antibody), or small molecules (Paclitaxel)—typically through the use of a collagen-binding domain (CBD). This technology allows for the recruitment of endogenous stem cells, controlled release of therapeutic agents, and the direction of cell differentiation at the site of injury. It has been investigated in clinical and preclinical studies for a wide range of indications, including spinal cord injury, vocal cord dysfunction, diabetic wound healing, and nerve regeneration.
