The functional collagen scaffold is an injectable biologic matrix developed by researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences for the treatment of severe vocal cord (vocal fold) injury and laryngeal soft tissue regeneration. This therapy functions as a combination product, utilizing a collagen-based scaffold as a delivery vehicle and retention matrix for autologous cells, typically adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) or autologous fat cells (AFCs). The scaffold is designed to provide structural support and a favorable microenvironment that enhances the survival, stability, and integration of transplanted cells within the vocal fold tissue. Clinical trials have demonstrated that this approach significantly improves voice quality and Voice Handicap Index (VHI) scores in patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis by promoting the reconstruction of the vocal fold's physiological structure.
