Fungitrin

Fungitrin is an antifungal oral gel containing 2% miconazole base, developed and manufactured by Birzeit Pharmaceutical Company. As a generic formulation of miconazole, it exerts its therapeutic effect by inhibiting the fungal enzyme lanosterol 14-alpha-demethylase (CYP51A1), which is essential for the conversion of lanosterol to ergosterol. This inhibition leads to the depletion of ergosterol and the accumulation of methylated sterol precursors, resulting in the disruption of fungal cell membrane integrity and function. Fungitrin is primarily indicated for the treatment of oral candidiasis (thrush) and fungal infections of the upper gastrointestinal tract. It is also used prophylactically to prevent oral thrush in patients receiving long-term treatment with antibiotics, steroids, or cytotoxic therapies.
