Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fungoid Tincture is a topical antifungal medication developed by Pedinol Pharmacal, which is currently a brand under Ortho Dermatologics (a division of Bausch Health). The product's active ingredient is miconazole nitrate at a 2% concentration, formulated as a tincture for topical application to the skin and nail areas. Miconazole is a small molecule azole antifungal that works by inhibiting the enzyme lanosterol 14-alpha-demethylase. This inhibition prevents the synthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes, leading to increased membrane permeability and the cessation of fungal growth. Fungoid Tincture is primarily indicated for the treatment of superficial fungal skin infections, including athlete's foot (tinea pedis) and ringworm (tinea corporis), particularly in the periungual regions. It is available over-the-counter and has been a staple in podiatric medicine for several decades.
