Overview

Furaltadone is a synthetic nitrofuran antibiotic and antiprotozoal agent, first patented in 1957 and introduced to the market in 1959 under the trade name Altafur. It contains a 5-nitrofuran ring and is structurally classified as a member of both morpholines and oxazolidinones. Furaltadone acts by damaging bacterial DNA, thereby inhibiting protein and nucleic acid synthesis, which leads to its antibacterial effects[8][1]. It has been used for treating bacterial infections such as otitis media, otitis externa, urinary tract infections in humans[2][3], coccidiosis in animals[5][6], and salmonella infection in poultry[7]. Due to concerns about potential carcinogenicity and mutagenicity of its residues, its use has been banned in food-producing animals within the European Union since 1993[3].
