Drug intelligence / Profile preview
A **combination therapy** of **furaprevir** (an investigational NS3 protease inhibitor), **peg-interferon alfa-2a** (a pegylated interferon used as an immunomodulator and antiviral), and **ribavirin** (a nucleoside analogue antiviral), investigated for treatment of **chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection**. - **Furaprevir** inhibits the NS3 serine protease required for HCV polyprotein processing and replication. - **Peg-interferon alfa-2a** enhances host immune response and exerts antiviral effects via interferon-stimulated genes. - **Ribavirin** likely induces lethal mutagenesis in virions and inhibits viral RNA synthesis. This combination would aim for synergistic inhibition of HCV replication across multiple stages and mechanisms, mainly in patients with chronic HCV; furaprevir is not yet widely studied or approved, whereas peg-interferon alfa-2a + ribavirin has established efficacy and approval as a dual therapy.
