Furazabol is a synthetic, orally active anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) that has been marketed in Japan since 1969 under brand names such as Frazalon, Miotalon, and Qu Zhi Shu[2][5][8]. It is a 17α-alkylated derivative of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), structurally related to stanozolol but distinguished by the presence of a furazan ring instead of pyrazole[2][7]. Furazabol exhibits a relatively high ratio of anabolic to androgenic activity and acts primarily by binding to androgen receptors in muscle cells, promoting protein synthesis and muscle growth[5][6]. Like other oral AAS with 17α-alkylation, it carries risks of hepatotoxicity and can adversely affect lipid profiles. Although it has been described as an antihyperlipidemic agent for conditions like atherosclerosis and hypercholesterolemia, these claims are disputed due to lack of robust evidence[2][6][7].
