Overview

FURESTEM-AD is an investigational allogeneic stem cell therapy developed by Kang Stem Biotech for the treatment of moderate to severe chronic atopic dermatitis. The therapy consists of mesenchymal stem cells derived from human umbilical cord blood (UC-MSCs). Its therapeutic mechanism involves the stimulation of these stem cells by interleukin-4 (IL-4), which triggers the secretion of transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). These mediators act to inhibit the activation and degranulation of mast cells, thereby reducing the allergic inflammatory response. FURESTEM-AD is designed as a single-dose treatment. While it has reached Phase 3 clinical trials, recent results (July 2024) indicated that the primary endpoint of EASI-50 at 12 weeks was not met, although the developer continues to evaluate long-term efficacy and explore regulatory pathways in Korea, Japan, and the United States.
