Overview

Furosemide is a loop diuretic medication primarily used to treat edema associated with congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, kidney disease (including nephrotic syndrome), and hypertension. It works by inhibiting the reabsorption of sodium and chloride in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle in the kidneys. This inhibition increases urine production (diuresis), which helps reduce fluid buildup and lower blood pressure. Furosemide can be administered orally as tablets or liquid solution and intravenously or subcutaneously for rapid effect. It was patented in 1959 and approved for medical use in 1964. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.
