Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Furosemide + benzalkonium chloride is a combination drug kit containing two active substances: furosemide, a potent loop diuretic, and benzalkonium chloride, a quaternary ammonium compound commonly used as a preservative and antimicrobial agent in pharmaceutical formulations. Furosemide acts on the kidneys to increase excretion of water and electrolytes by inhibiting sodium-potassium-chloride cotransporters in the thick ascending loop of Henle, leading to diuresis and reduction of excess fluid associated with conditions like congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and renal disease. Benzalkonium chloride in the formulation provides antimicrobial activity, aiding in preservation and safety of the product. The combination is used when a greater diuretic effect with an antimicrobial-preserved delivery system is desired[5][7].
