Overview

furosemide + digoxin is an experimental combination therapy being evaluated for the intralesional treatment of cutaneous warts. Developed by researchers at Benha University, this formulation combines furosemide, a loop diuretic that inhibits the Na+/K+/2Cl- cotransporter (NKCC), and digoxin, a cardiac glycoside that inhibits the Na+/K+-ATPase pump. The therapeutic rationale involves the disruption of intracellular ionic balance within human papillomavirus (HPV)-infected keratinocytes. By altering the concentrations of sodium, potassium, and chloride, the combination is hypothesized to induce cellular stress and apoptosis or interfere with viral replication and assembly, providing a localized alternative to traditional destructive or immunomodulatory wart treatments.
