Furvina is a synthetic nitrovinylfuran antimicrobial agent with broad-spectrum activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeasts, and filamentous fungi. It is primarily used in Cuba as an ointment (Dermofural) for the treatment of dermatological infections. Furvina acts by binding to the P-site of the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting protein synthesis at the translation initiation stage. Specifically, it interferes with ribosomal binding of fMet-tRNA during formation of the 30S initiation complex and blocks translation initiation in a start codon-dependent manner—being effective against mRNAs with canonical AUG or rare AUA start codons but less so for non-canonical AUU or AUC codons. This mechanism represents a novel antibiotic target[1][2][4][8].
