Overview

Fusaric acid is a **picolinic acid derivative** and a **mycotoxin** produced by fungi of the Fusarium genus[4][8]. It acts as an **antibiotic and plant wilting agent**, and has been explored as a **medical research tool** but is not approved for clinical use. Its main mechanism of action is the **inhibition of dopamine beta-hydroxylase**, the enzyme responsible for converting dopamine to norepinephrine, which impacts catecholamine biosynthesis in humans[1][4][7][9]. This can result in blood pressure reduction and potential symptom relief in diseases such as pheochromocytoma and contributes to its potential antineoplastic/anticancer activities by inducing cytotoxic effects and oxidative damage in cancer cells[3][10]. Fusaric acid has also been studied for its effects on neurotransmitter metabolism and cell cycle arrest[3][7]. It is primarily used experimentally and as a biochemical tool in research; it is toxic and not approved for routine human administration[2][4].
