Fusarium compactum is a fungal species identified as a phytopathogen causing fruit rot in watermelons and enhancing virulence in Egyptian broomrape infections. It is also known to produce various secondary metabolites, including trichothecenes (such as verrucarins A, B, M, L acetate, roridin A, isotrichoverrin B, and trichoverrol B) and neosoloaniol monoacetate, which inhibit Orobanche ramosa seed germination. Additionally, it produces novel triterpene sulfates that inhibit rhinovirus 3C protease. The fungus's response to heavy metals like cadmium and mercury involves increased cysteine and glutathione content and elevated O-acetylserine(thiol)lyase (OASTL) activity.
