Fusicoccin is a diterpenoid glycoside phytotoxin produced by the fungus Fusicoccum amygdali (also known as Diaporthe amygdali), primarily affecting almond and peach trees[1][2][4]. It acts by irreversibly opening plant stomata through rapid acidification of the cell wall, leading to uncontrolled water loss and plant death[1]. Mechanistically, fusicoccin forms a complex with 14-3-3 proteins and activates plasma membrane H+-ATPase, resulting in increased proton extrusion, cell wall acidification, hyperpolarization of the cell membrane, stimulation of cytochrome c release from mitochondria, and disruption of mitochondrial electron transport[6][7]. Fusicoccin is widely used in plant physiology research to study auxin signaling and related processes but is not used as a pharmaceutical or agricultural product due to its toxicity[1][5].
