Overview
Futagliptin is an oral small molecule drug that acts as a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor. It is being developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. As a DPP-4 inhibitor, futagliptin works by inhibiting the enzyme DPP-4, which results in increased levels of incretin hormones such as glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). These hormones help regulate blood glucose by increasing insulin secretion and decreasing glucagon release in response to meals, thereby improving glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
