Overview
Fuyang Jieyu is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula developed by the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, specifically within the department led by Professor Pan Jihui. It is designed to treat major depressive disorder (MDD), particularly cases diagnosed under TCM theory as Yang-deficiency and stagnation. The formula is typically prepared as a hospital-made granule or decoction. Pharmacological research suggests that Fuyang Jieyu exerts its antidepressant effects by modulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, increasing the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus, and elevating the levels of monoamine neurotransmitters such as serotonin (5-HT), norepinephrine (NE), and dopamine (DA). It is often used as an adjunctive or standalone therapy in clinical settings in China.
