The formula typically consists of eight herbs: Bupleurum chinense (Chai Hu), Angelica sinensis (Dang Gui), Trichosanthes kirilowii (Tian Hua Fen), Carthamus tinctorius (Hong Hua), Prunus persica (Tao Ren), Rheum officinale (Da Huang), Manis pentadactyla (Chuan Shan Jia - often substituted in modern practice), and Glycyrrhiza uralensis (Gan Cao). In clinical settings, it is being investigated for its efficacy in treating postoperative constipation following orthopedic surgeries, such as those for osteoporotic thoracolumbar fractures, by promoting gastrointestinal motility and reducing inflammatory responses associated with surgical trauma.
