Overview

Fuzhuan brick tea extract is a natural product derived from Fuzhuan brick tea—a traditional Chinese post-fermented dark tea made from Camellia sinensis leaves and fermented primarily by the fungus Eurotium cristatum (also known as Aspergillus cristatus)[1][2][9]. The fermentation process produces unique bioactive compounds including polyphenols (such as catechins and theaflavins), flavonoids, polysaccharides, organic acids, caffeine, and other metabolites[5][6][8]. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that fuzhuan brick tea extract exerts anti-obesity effects by promoting energy expenditure and stimulating the browning of white adipose tissue through upregulation of brown adipocyte-specific genes like uncoupling protein 1[1]. It also shows hypolipidemic activity (reducing blood lipids) and improves glucose metabolism in animal models of obesity and diabetes[2][3]. Mechanistically, these effects are associated with modulation of lipid metabolism pathways (including PPARA), anti-inflammatory actions (e.g., downregulation of MAPK14), antioxidant properties via scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS), regulation of gut microbiota composition, inhibition of α-glucosidase activity in vitro, and improvement in mitochondrial function in skeletal muscle under metabolic stress[2][5][9]. Fuzhuan brick tea extracts are not approved pharmaceuticals but are used as dietary supplements or functional foods for their potential health benefits.
