Overview

G-MELT is an orally disintegrating tablet (ODT) formulation of glimepiride, a third-generation sulfonylurea used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Developed by Micro Labs, this formulation is specifically designed to dissolve rapidly on the tongue without the need for water, which improves patient compliance and provides a convenient administration option for individuals with dysphagia. Glimepiride acts as an insulin secretagogue by binding to the sulfonylurea receptor 1 (SUR1) subunit of ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels on the membrane of pancreatic beta cells. This binding leads to the closure of the KATP channels, resulting in cell depolarization and the subsequent opening of voltage-gated calcium channels. The resulting influx of calcium triggers the exocytosis of insulin granules into the bloodstream. G-MELT is typically prescribed as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes.
