Drug intelligence / Profile preview
G.S.P. Oral Solution is a diagnostic pharmaceutical product containing galactose, designed for the quantitative assessment of residual liver function. It is used in the Oral Galactose Single Point (OGSP) method, which involves measuring the blood concentration of galactose exactly 60 minutes after oral administration of a standardized dose (typically 0.5 g/kg). Because galactose is almost exclusively metabolized by the liver, its clearance rate serves as a reliable indicator of functional hepatic mass and effective liver blood flow. This method is intended to be a simpler, non-invasive alternative to traditional intravenous galactose clearance tests and is used to evaluate the severity of liver diseases such as cirrhosis and hepatitis, as well as to guide dosing for hepatically metabolized drugs. The U.S. FDA has recommended the GSP method in its guidelines for industry pharmacokinetics for patients with impaired hepatic function.
