G5-K solution

G5-K Solution is a balanced crystalloid intravenous fluid used for perioperative fluid management. It is a glucose 5%/potassium-based balanced solution, containing sodium (50.0 mmol/l), potassium (30.0 mmol/l), magnesium (2.0 mmol/l), chloride (65 mmol/l), lactate (18 mmol/l), phosphate (8.0 mmol/l), and glucose (50 g/l). Notably, it contains no calcium or acetate. Unlike many standard crystalloids, it is designed to avoid supraphysiologic chloride loading, with the goal of achieving near-zero water and salt balance perioperatively. It was studied in the context of bladder cancer—specifically in adult patients undergoing open radical cystectomy with urinary diversion—in an investigator-initiated, single-center, randomized controlled trial at Bern University Hospital (Inselspital), Switzerland. The trial compared G5-K solution against Ringerfundin (Ringer's maleate) as a baseline perioperative infusion.
