Overview

This is an investigational multimodal analgesic regimen developed by **Inova Health Care Services** for the management of postoperative pain, specifically in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. The regimen consists of oral **gabapentin**, which modulates the alpha-2-delta subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels to inhibit the release of excitatory neurotransmitters, and intravenous **acetaminophen**, which provides analgesia through the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis in the central nervous system. This combination is being evaluated as an opioid-sparing approach (the **INOVAOPIOID** study) to reduce the incidence of opioid-related adverse events, such as postoperative ileus and respiratory complications, while providing effective pain relief compared to standard opioid-based protocols.
