Overview

Gabapentin + ethanol refers to the combination or concurrent use of **gabapentin**, a gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) analog and anticonvulsant, with **ethanol** (alcohol), a central nervous system (CNS) depressant. Gabapentin is prescribed for neuropathic pain, epilepsy, and restless legs syndrome, and acts by modulating calcium channels and influencing neurotransmitter release in the CNS. Ethanol acts as a CNS depressant with widespread effects on brain neurotransmission. The combination results in potentially additive or synergistic CNS depressive effects, leading to increased risks of drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, impaired coordination, and severe respiratory depression. In clinical and toxicology contexts, this combination is generally considered hazardous due to increased risk of overdose, dependency, cognitive impairment, and potentially fatal respiratory depression[1][2]. This is not a therapeutic combination and is strongly discouraged outside of controlled research or accidental co-ingestion.
