Overview

Gabapentin lactam (GBP-L) is a chemical derivative of gabapentin, itself an anticonvulsant and neuropathic pain drug. GBP-L has demonstrated **neuroprotective properties** in preclinical studies; in vitro, it reduces hypoxia-induced glutamate release in neural tissue, a mechanism reversed by glibenclamide, suggesting it acts as an **opener of ATP-sensitive potassium channels**. In vivo, GBP-L showed neuroprotection in animal models of acute retinal ischemia, increasing neuronal survival even when administered up to 4 hours post-ischemia. Proposed indications include acute retinal ischemia and potentially optic neuropathies such as glaucoma[1].
