Overview

Gadobutrol is a second-generation, non-ionic, macrocyclic gadolinium-based contrast agent (GBCA) used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). It is administered intravenously to enhance the visualization of blood vessels, organs, and tissues by shortening proton T1 relaxation times. This improves the contrast of images for detecting lesions or abnormal vascularity. Gadobutrol is formulated at twice the gadolinium ion concentration compared to other GBCAs, allowing for a lower injection volume and improved dynamic image enhancement. It is indicated for use in adults and children—including neonates—to detect central nervous system abnormalities with disrupted blood-brain barrier or abnormal vascularity; assess malignant breast disease; evaluate supra-aortic or renal artery disease; and assess myocardial perfusion and late gadolinium enhancement in coronary artery disease. The drug is physiologically inert, rapidly distributed into extracellular space after intravenous administration, minimally binds plasma proteins, is not metabolized, and is primarily eliminated via urine[1][2][3][5][6][7][8]. Developed by Bayer.
