Gadopentetate dimeglumine is a gadolinium-based contrast agent (GBCA) used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to enhance the visibility of blood vessels, organs, and other tissues. It works by altering the magnetic properties of nearby water molecules, thereby improving the contrast of images obtained during MRI scans. Gadopentetate dimeglumine does not cross an intact blood-brain barrier but accumulates in areas where this barrier is disrupted or where there is abnormal vascularity. It is primarily indicated for diagnosing abnormalities in the brain, spine, and other parts of the central nervous system as well as for imaging other body tissues[1][2][3][5]. The drug was originally developed by Schering AG (now part of Bayer). Caution should be exercised in patients with kidney disease due to risk of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis[2].
