Gadoterate meglumine is a paramagnetic macrocyclic ionic contrast agent used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to enhance the visualization of blood vessels, organs, and other non-bony tissues. It is a gadolinium-based contrast agent (GBCA) that works by producing a large magnetic moment when placed in a magnetic field, thereby increasing the relaxation rate of nearby protons and enhancing signal intensity on MRI images. This allows for clearer differentiation between normal and abnormal tissues, particularly in the brain, spine, head, neck, and associated structures. Gadoterate meglumine is administered intravenously prior to MRI scans for both adult and pediatric patients[1][2][3][4][5][6]. The drug is primarily indicated for detecting areas with disruption of the blood-brain barrier or abnormal vascularity[6]. It should be used with caution in patients with severe renal impairment due to risk of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis[2][9].
