Gadoteridol is a macrocyclic, nonionic gadolinium-based contrast agent (GBCA) used as an intravenous solution to enhance the quality of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), particularly for detecting and visualizing lesions and abnormal vascularity in the brain, spine, head, or neck. It works by shortening T1 relaxation times in tissues where it accumulates, thereby increasing signal intensity on T1-weighted MRI sequences. Gadoteridol is paramagnetic; when placed in a magnetic field during MRI, it develops a magnetic moment that enhances the relaxation rates of nearby water protons. This property improves visualization of normal and pathological tissue structures compared to unenhanced MRI. The drug was initially approved by the FDA in 1992 and later received approval for use in pediatric patients under 2 years old. Gadoteridol is primarily indicated for diagnostic imaging but should be used with caution in patients with severe renal impairment due to risk of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis[1][3][4][6].
