Gadusol is a natural marine-derived metabolite, structurally related to mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), primarily found in the eggs of various fish species and some invertebrates. It functions as a potent photoprotective agent by absorbing ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation and acting as a strong antioxidant. Research indicates that gadusol can protect skin cells, such as melanocytes, from UVB-induced damage, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and apoptosis. Due to its natural origin and efficacy, it is being explored as a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to synthetic UV filters in sunscreens and dermatological applications. Biosynthetic pathways for gadusol have been identified in fish, and yeast-based production methods are being developed to facilitate its commercial use.
