Overview

Gal-geun-dang-gwi-tang (GGDGT) is a traditional Korean herbal medicine used clinically to treat hypertension, stroke, diabetes, and other inflammatory vascular disorders. In animal models of diabetic atherosclerosis, GGDGT has demonstrated improvement of glucose tolerance, lipid levels, and endothelial dysfunction. Mechanistically, it attenuates vascular inflammation by suppressing the expression of adhesion molecules such as ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and E-selectin. GGDGT also restores endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1) expression, suggesting action through the nitric oxide (NO)-cyclic guanosine monophosphate signaling pathway and improvement of insulin sensitivity in diabetic complications[1][3].
