Galacto-xyloglucan is a natural glucose polymer derived from the seeds of *Tamarindus indica*. It features branched side chains due to the insertion of xylose residues, which can be further linked to galactose and fucose. This unique structure allows it to mimic the natural mucosal barrier, providing protective effects on epithelial surfaces by limiting the entry of harmful agents. Galacto-xyloglucan is primarily used as a mucoadhesive agent in ophthalmic formulations for dry eye disease and has also been investigated as an immunostimulatory agent with selective cytotoxicity against cancer cells. In combination with hyaluronic acid, it demonstrates synergistic protective effects on the ocular surface and improves symptoms associated with dry eye disease[1][2][5]. As a drug delivery vehicle (e.g., in nanoparticle form), it enhances targeted delivery and cytotoxicity of chemotherapeutics like doxorubicin while sparing normal cells[2].
