Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Oligomate is a brand of galactooligosaccharides (GOS) developed by Yakult Pharmaceutical Industry. It is a non-digestible prebiotic functional food ingredient derived from lactose through enzymatic conversion using beta-galactosidase. As a prebiotic, Oligomate passes through the upper gastrointestinal tract undigested and reaches the colon, where it serves as a selective carbon source for beneficial bacteria, particularly *Bifidobacterium* species. The fermentation of GOS by these bacteria produces short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which lower intestinal pH, inhibit the growth of potential pathogens, and support overall digestive health and immune function. Oligomate is widely used as a functional ingredient in various food products, including dairy, infant formula, and dietary supplements, and is recognized in Japan as a Food for Specified Health Uses (FOSHU).
