Overview

Galantamine is a small molecule acetylcholinesterase inhibitor used primarily for the treatment of mild to moderate dementia associated with Alzheimer's disease. It acts as a competitive and reversible inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase, thereby increasing levels of acetylcholine in the brain and enhancing cholinergic neurotransmission. In addition to its anticholinesterase activity, galantamine is also a positive allosteric modulator of neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. This dual mechanism may contribute to improvements in cognition, global function, activities of daily living, and behavioral symptoms in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Galantamine does not cure or halt the progression of Alzheimer's disease but can provide symptomatic relief for some patients[1][2][3][6]. Developed by Janssen.
