galantamine + donepezil

Galantamine + donepezil is a combination of two cholinesterase inhibitors, both used individually for the symptomatic treatment of mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. Both drugs work by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase, the enzyme responsible for breaking down acetylcholine in the brain, thereby increasing acetylcholine levels and enhancing cholinergic neurotransmission. This mechanism may temporarily alleviate or stabilize cognitive symptoms associated with Alzheimer's disease[3][4][6][8]. While both agents are approved as monotherapies, their combined use is not standard practice due to overlapping mechanisms and increased risk of adverse effects; however, there are case reports discussing concomitant use in mixed dementia[1].
