Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Galega officinalis extract is a botanical extract derived from the aerial parts or seeds of *Galega officinalis* (commonly known as goat's rue or French lilac). Historically, the guanidine derivative galegine found in this plant served as the structural basis for the development of the antidiabetic drug metformin. The extract is a complex mixture containing phenols, flavonol triglycosides, alkaloids (including galegine), terpenes, resins, steroids, and fatty acids. It has been investigated preclinically for its hypoglycemic, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties, particularly in animal models of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Additionally, it is traditionally used as a galactagogue to stimulate lactation and has been studied for weight reduction. More recently, in combination with resveratrol and sea buckthorn fruit oil (as Metforhair®), it has been researched for its potential to attenuate cellular senescence in human hair follicles and dermal fibroblasts.
