Galligas is a radiopharmaceutical diagnostic agent composed of carbon nanoparticles labeled with the positron-emitting radioisotope Gallium-68 (Ga-68). It is specifically designed for lung ventilation imaging using Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT). The nanoparticles, which range from 30 to 60 nm in size, are generated through the ultra-high temperature sublimation of Ga-68 in a carbon crucible, a process adapted from the Technegas generator technology. Galligas provides high-resolution, three-dimensional visualization of regional pulmonary ventilation, enabling the assessment of inhaled particle deposition and clearance. This is particularly valuable for diagnosing and monitoring obstructive lung diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as well as for evaluating pulmonary embolism when used in conjunction with perfusion imaging. It serves as a PET-compatible alternative to the widely used SPECT agent Technegas (Tc-99m labeled carbon).
