Overview

68Ga-PSMA-1007 is a radiopharmaceutical diagnostic agent used in positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. It consists of a small-molecule ligand that binds with high affinity to the extracellular domain of the prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA), also known as glutamate carboxypeptidase II. The ligand is labeled with the positron-emitting radioisotope Gallium-68. Developed primarily by the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), PSMA-1007 is distinguished from other PSMA-targeting tracers (such as 68Ga-PSMA-11) by its predominantly hepatobiliary excretion. This metabolic profile results in minimal radioactivity in the urinary tract and bladder, facilitating clearer imaging of the prostate bed and pelvic regions, which is particularly beneficial for detecting local recurrence and peritoneal metastases. Erasmus MC has specifically investigated its utility in identifying peritoneal metastases in various cancers.
