Overview

Gallium-67 is a radioactive isotope of gallium, primarily used in nuclear medicine as a diagnostic **radiopharmaceutical** in the form of gallium-67 citrate. It is cyclotron-produced and has a half-life of 78.3 hours. When injected intravenously as gallium-67 citrate, it binds in the bloodstream to transferrin, lactoferrin, and other proteins, mimicking the behavior of ferric iron. This leads to its accumulation in tumor tissues, sites of infection, and inflammation by mechanisms such as increased blood flow, metabolic activity, and iron transport protein expression in these regions. Imaging is performed by detecting gamma radiation from the isotope using SPECT. Its main indications are the detection and evaluation of lymphoma (especially Hodgkin’s), lung cancer, and sites of infection or inflammation (e.g., fever of unknown origin, sarcoidosis, osteomyelitis)[1][2][4][7][8][9]. Unlike gallium-68, which is used in PET, gallium-67 is used for SPECT/gamma camera imaging[1][2][3].
