Gallium-68 bombesin is a radiopharmaceutical consisting of the positron-emitting isotope gallium-68 chelated to a bombesin analogue, most commonly via DOTA or similar chelators. Bombesin is a peptide that selectively binds to the gastrin-releasing peptide receptor (GRPR), which is frequently overexpressed in several cancers, notably prostate cancer. Upon intravenous injection, 68Ga-bombesin selectively accumulates in GRPR-expressing tumor tissue. Positron emission tomography (PET) can then be used to visualize and localize GRPR-positive tumors, potentially allowing more precise cancer imaging and staging. The drug is under active clinical investigation primarily for the detection and evaluation of prostate cancer, but research also explores its utility in other GRPR-expressing tumors such as breast, gastrointestinal, and small cell lung cancer[1][4][5][7].
