Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Gallium-68 edetate (also known as [68Ga]Ga-EDTA) is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical used as a positron emission tomography (PET) imaging tracer. It is a physiologically stable metal chelate of the positron-emitting radionuclide gallium-68 and the chelating agent ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Because it does not bind to plasma proteins and is cleared exclusively from the bloodstream via glomerular filtration in the kidneys without tubular secretion or reabsorption, gallium-68 edetate is primarily utilized for the non-invasive, quantitative assessment of renal function and glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Additionally, due to its inability to cross an intact blood-brain barrier (BBB), it has historically been used to evaluate BBB permeability and disruption in conditions such as brain tumors and multiple sclerosis.
