Gallium-68 ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (68Ga-EDTA) is a radiopharmaceutical imaging agent used in positron emission tomography (PET). It consists of the positron-emitting radioisotope gallium-68 complexed with the chelating agent ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). As a metal-essential radiopharmaceutical, its pharmacokinetics are determined by the physical and chemical properties of the chelate complex rather than biological targeting. It is primarily excreted by the kidneys via glomerular filtration, making it a tool for renal imaging and the quantitative assessment of glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Historically, it was used to image brain tumors by identifying disruptions in the blood-brain barrier. More recently, it has been investigated as an inhaled aerosol for PET/CT lung ventilation scans to evaluate airway function and particle deposition in patients with obstructive pulmonary diseases like asthma and COPD.
