Gallium 68 macroaggregated albumin (68Ga-MAA) is a radiopharmaceutical used for diagnostic imaging, particularly for lung perfusion studies using Positron Emission Tomography (PET). It consists of macroaggregated human serum albumin particles labeled with the positron-emitting radioisotope gallium-68. The particles become trapped in the first capillary bed encountered after intravenous injection, creating a temporary blockade of terminal arterioles/capillaries in the lung, allowing for visualization of pulmonary blood flow. 68Ga-MAA can be prepared from commercially available kits originally designed for technetium-99m labeling of MAA. The labeling process typically involves heating at optimal temperatures (around 90°C) to achieve high radiochemical purity. 68Ga-MAA has also been investigated for use in Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) dosimetry and treatment planning.
