Overview

Gallium Ga-68 is a positron-emitting radioisotope used as a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical component for Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging. It has a physical half-life of approximately 68 minutes and decays primarily (89%) by positron emission, which results in the production of 511 keV annihilation photons detectable by PET scanners. Gallium Ga-68 is typically produced via a Germanium-68/Gallium-68 generator, providing a convenient, cyclotron-independent source for clinical facilities. In clinical practice, the isotope is chemically conjugated to various targeting molecules, such as somatostatin receptor ligands (e.g., DOTATATE, DOTATOC) or prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) inhibitors, to enable high-resolution diagnostic visualization of neuroendocrine tumors and prostate cancer.
