Gallium Ga-68 citrate is an investigational radiopharmaceutical being evaluated as a functional imaging agent for positron emission tomography (PET) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Developed by Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, it utilizes the positron-emitting isotope Gallium-68. Gallium ions (Ga3+) act as iron mimetics, binding to plasma transferrin and subsequently being internalized by cells via transferrin receptors, which are frequently upregulated in HCC. This mechanism allows for the visualization of intrahepatic lesions and potentially provides a more sensitive diagnostic tool compared to conventional CT or MRI for HCC detection and treatment monitoring.
