Overview

Gallium Ga-68 P15-041 is a radiopharmaceutical PET tracer designed for the high-sensitivity imaging of Carbonic Anhydrase IX (CAIX) expression. CAIX is a transmembrane enzyme that is significantly overexpressed in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) and various tumors associated with Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease, such as hemangioblastomas and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, due to the stabilization of hypoxia-inducible factors (HIF). Developed by Ospedale San Raffaele, the tracer consists of a small-molecule CAIX inhibitor (P15-041) chelated with the positron-emitting radioisotope Gallium-68. This allows for non-invasive detection and monitoring of multi-organ lesions in VHL patients, where CAIX serves as a highly specific biomarker for VHL-deficient cells. The tracer is primarily utilized in Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) imaging to improve staging and management of VHL-related manifestations.
