Gallium Ga 68-VMT02 is a radiopharmaceutical diagnostic agent used in positron emission tomography (PET) imaging to detect tumors that express the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R). Upon administration, the compound targets and binds to MC1R-expressing tumor cells—primarily melanoma—enabling their visualization via PET scans. MC1R is a G protein-coupled receptor expressed by melanocytes and involved in regulating skin and hair pigmentation. Gallium-68 is a positron-emitting isotope with a short half-life (~68 minutes), allowing for rapid imaging protocols with reduced radiation exposure.
